Amalifi Coast

Legend has it that Hercules loved a nymph called Amalfi. When she died, in her honor Hercules buried her in the world's most beautiful place and gave the place her name. The Amalfi Coast is stunning and is regarded as Europe's most beautiful stretch of coast.  

The Amalfi Coast (la Costiera Amalfitana) is a beautiful 50 kilometer stretch of mountainous coastline situated just south of Naples between Sorrento and Salerno. The road hugs the tight bends of this cliffy coast, overlooking intensely blue waters and passing picture postcard villages that cling to the cliff walls. The small picturesque villages and towns are stacked precariously on steep rocky cliffs plunging sheer down into the the Mediterranean Sea. Here is located the famous and sublime nature beauty of the islands of Capri and Ischia.

Amalfi is the largest town on this stretch of coast and a good place to base yourself when visiting the area. This small and picturesque seaside resort has almost perfect great weather. and is famous for its maritime history and has some spectacular scenery. The white, pink and yellow cottages are surrounded by whitewashed courtyards and winding alleys. Many buildings in the town are surrounded by immaculately kept gardens and terraces, grape and olive vines and lemon trees.

On the edge of  town's harbor you can find the Piazza Flavio Gioia. In fact one of its sides is directly perched over the ocean. This is a lively area with age-old workshops and a chapel of St. Ann. There are many bars on the harbor where you can have a glass of superb Italian wine blesses with a delicious antipasto. Ships to Positano, Salerno and the island of Capri leave from this harbor. There are also boats to take you on a day-trip tour of the famous Grotta Smeralda (the green grotto).

For those wishing to study Italian surrounded my history, culture and the slower Italain way of life, this is an ideal location.
